How to avoid academic dishonesty

Writer: IB Chemistry ClinicIB Chemistry Clinic

Academic dishonesty is a serious offence in the eyes of the IBO. Students could lose their IB Diploma (even after it has been awarded) if they are caught plagiarising. It is crucial that there is no mark on your record because you cheated or colluded, and students should learn the proper citation techniques so that when they go to university, they know how to go about academic writing without finding out the hard way from their peers and professors.

What is academic dishonesty?

  • Plagiarism: using someone else’s work or ideas without proper attribution

  • Cheating: using unauthorised materials or help during an exam

  • Fabrication: faking data or information

  • Collusion: collaborating with others inappropriately on assignments which are individual

How should I cite my sources?

If doing citations using flashcards is too much, there are reliable citation generators to help you cite your sources according to the required citation style. Students need to be consistent with the citation style and use reliable and authoritative sources for their research. Even when students paraphrase things, they still need to cite their sources.

As far as possible, students should not copy the wording and ensure all submitted work is genuinely their own. By getting someone else to write the work for you without doing it yourself, this is taking a shortcut which undermines your goal of learning and prevents you from developing the skills needed.

How can students develop good study habits?

Students should try to take notes in class if they do not understand the material. They should ask for help from teachers, tutors, or classmates instead of cheating if they do not understand the material. Cheating is like kicking the can down the road – sooner or later, it will catch up to you. Even though students cheat on their IB assignments, there is still the final exam they need to contend with. Even if students end up with their IB diploma, when they go to university and do not understand how to go about academic writing, they are in trouble.

Furthermore, cheating carries consequences like disciplinary action from the school. The school or the IBO could issue a failing grade, suspend a student, or even expel them. If there is a black mark on your record for an academic offence, this could also damage your reputation which could affect your chances to be admitted to a future educational institution. It is not worth it to cheat – in the long run, you may face consequences that are too much to bear. If you need help, you should seek help to address the gaps in your knowledge.

Get a 7 for IB Chemistry (HL/SL) with the IB Chemistry Clinic today!

As the name suggests, the IB Chemistry Clinic does not only fix a student’s grades - it helps students with critical components of the IB Programme, namely the Internal Assessment (IA) which is worth at least 20% of a student’s grade and their Extended Essay (EE) in Chemistry. The IA and EE are a non-negotiable part of the Chemistry curriculum - without them, students will not be able to graduate with an IB Diploma. However, there are many difficulties associated with conducting experiments for the IA and EE - many replications are required and the standard for the final deliverable - the research report - is high. Students need to undertake statistical testing and present their final results coherently and concisely.

Although the IB school provides mentors for the EE and teachers at school can guide students through their IA, attention to each student is often limited in a classroom setting and many students are left to figure things out by themselves. This results in difficulty completing internal deadlines on time, especially when a student needs to juggle all their 6 subjects and the additional components of the IB, along with their CCAs and other commitments.

The IB Chemistry Clinic is here to answer all your questions - whether it is about content knowledge or fixing errors in your experimental setup as you undertake your IA journey, our skilled tutors with a strong background in Chemistry research and 30 years of experience teaching Chemistry are here to help!
