Do not sacrifice long-term goals for short-term success!

Writer: IB Chemistry ClinicIB Chemistry Clinic

The IB is designed not just to provide academic knowledge but also to cultivate personal growth, critical thinking, and a sense of global citizenship. Every student is encouraged to pursue a holistic education whether that’s further academic pursuits in University, becoming a well-rounded individual, or that much-coveted 45/45. One of the most important aspects of the IB is navigating short-term successes while keeping them in line with your long-term goals.

Long-Term Goals in the IB

Long-term goals within the IB framework can vary widely – it all depends on what you want! It could be the desire for academic excellence as some aspire to achieve a perfect score of 45 points, reflecting their academic potential and providing a competitive edge for university applications. Others may be motivated by personal development in aspects like time-management, critical thinking, etc. to ultimately grow as an individual.

Many students hope the IB will help them stand out in university admissions, but for others, the ultimate goal may be to use the knowledge and skills gained through the program to become a better, more informed person.

Whatever the specific long-term goal may be, it’s important that students remain focused on the bigger picture and avoid being sidetracked by short-term successes that will often provide quick and easy gratification but not align with your definition of long-term success. The key to coming out of the IB is to manage these two well.

Short-Term Success

In the academic realm, short-term successes might include an excessive focus on individual tests, grades, or competitions. These are sources of academic acclaim and are sure to provide you a competitive edge over your classmates while giving you fulfilment in the short-term. However, it is important to balance these broader learning or personal growth. Focusing too narrowly on these immediate achievements can lead you to neglect aspects of IB and ultimately your career that are significantly more important. Most IB students in courses and jobs where they are thriving the most chose their academic battles depending on what their long-term goals were!

Building a portfolio solely for the sake of appearing impressive to universities—such as joining clubs or competitions that don’t align with the your future interests—can divert attention from genuine academic pursuits. This approach, although rewarding in the short term, could ultimately result in a lack of deeper understanding or personal fulfilment. For example, coming first in a literature analysis competition shows academic prowess and an appreciation of the literary arts, but how would it align with the long-term goals of  somebody who wants to pursue a university course in Engineering or Medicine?

Every article about putting teenagers in stressful situations must discuss the temptation of short-term gratification that comes from the social aspect of a young student’s life. Teenagers, especially during the challenging and stressful years of the IB, may feel the pull of social media popularity, peer pressure, and the like. These distractions, while offering immediate gratification and social validation, can undermine the focus required for long-term success in the IB. Students in the IB absolutely need and deserve to take time off every now and then, so that they can cool off from the chronic stress they’ve been facing, which is why it's important to choose coping mechanisms that are good for you. There is a world of difference between healthy ways of working around stress, and detaching completely to indulge in habits that will ultimately be damaging for you.

Short-term successes, academic or otherwise are important to excel in the IBDP. They make you a more holistic and well-rounded individual, which don't seem important now because all an IB student really cares about right now is their 45 points. Inadvertently, however, you become what you spend your time on, and the grade or portfolio you earn at the end of these 2 years will be a product of just that.

Striking a Balance

The key to navigating this tension between short-term rewards and long-term goals in the IB is balance. It’s important for students to understand that while short-term successes—whether academic or non-academic—can offer valuable experiences, they should not overshadow the long-term objectives that the IB is designed to help them achieve. Rather than focusing solely on grades or momentary popularity, students should aim to prioritize their learning and personal development. This might mean resisting the urge to sacrifice study time for social activities or to pursue recognition in areas that don't align with their long-term career or academic goals.

At the end of the day, it’s a question of time and how much of it the student would want to devote to achieving their long-term goals. Short-term academic pursuits are a great addition to your portfolio and no doubt will grow you as an individual, but we need to keep in mind the purpose of the IBDP and what the end goal is.

The best way to achieve that is to have your short-term goals align with your long-term ones! For example, if you wanted to pursue a career in medicine, your long-term goal would be to create a portfolio that reflects your commitment to healthcare, compassion, and critical thinking. To achieve this, your short-term goals should focus on activities that build towards this vision, not just academically but also in your personal growth and extracurricular pursuits.

For instance, short-term projects might include engaging in community service, where you can volunteer / shadow in healthcare settings or participate in public health initiatives. This aligns with your long-term goal of building a medical career by demonstrating your dedication to helping others, as well as gaining experience in a healthcare environment. Additionally, involvement in activities such as first aid courses, shadowing doctors, or conducting research projects related to medicine would complement your academic learning and build a well-rounded portfolio that aligns with your future aspirations.

With all this talk about long-term goals, it’s equally important to establish what those goals are, and also to recognise that these may change over the years (which is perfectly fine!). The IBDP is a long two years, and there’s ample time to decide what it is you want out of the programme. While there’s no rush to decide these goals per se, the sooner you realise what they are, the more time you can devote to achieving them. Start broad and be mindful of the things that are important to you. When you’ve narrowed down on these goals, you can give your all to striking a balance between long and short-term goals and ultimately make them come true.
